The Japan Women's Championship, officially the WE League, is the top tier of professional women's football in Japan. Launched in 2021, it features 12 teams competing for the national title, Asian club spots, and the growth of women's soccer. The league emerged from the success of Japan's national team, world champions in 2011.

History and foundation

Women's football in Japan began in the 1980s, with the L.League starting in 1989 as a semi-pro setup with 8 teams. It evolved into the professional WE League in 2021 under the Japan Football Association. Highlights include Nadeshiko's (now INAC Kobe Leonessa) dominance, a 2016 referee scandal prompting reforms, and adaptation to COVID-19 protocols. The league introduced foreign players in its early pro years.

Tournament format

The format consists of a 22-match regular season in a home-and-away round-robin. Top 3 teams advance to playoffs culminating in a grand final for the title. No relegation, but promotion from Division 2 exists. Season runs September to February, with breaks for national team duties.
