The Italian Eccellenza Championship is a regional tier in Italy's football pyramid, sitting at the sixth level. It features amateur clubs from across the country's regions, with matches played on intimate grounds packed with loyal fans. This division serves as a talent feeder for Serie D, where sides battle fiercely for promotion amid intense local rivalries and dramatic twists that embody grassroots Italian football.

History and foundation

Established in 1991 following a restructuring of Italian football, Eccellenza replaced the old Promozione. Each of Italy's 20 regions hosts one to four groups. Notably, clubs like Monza kickstarted their ascent to Serie B from here in the 2000s. A highlight was the 2018/19 Lombardy season, where Fanfulla returned to Serie D after two decades, and in Tuscany, Grassina stunned favorites. Reforms by FIGC in 2014 expanded groups to boost competition.

Tournament format

Each regional group comprises 14–18 teams playing 26–34 matches in a single round-robin, followed by playoffs. Group winners earn direct promotion to Serie D, runners-up contest inter-regional playoffs for extra spots. Bottom teams face relegation to Promozione via table and play-outs. With around 170 groups nationwide, fixtures are weekend affairs with minimal postponements.
