The Iraqi Stars League is Iraq's top-tier professional football competition, featuring the nation's premier clubs vying for domestic supremacy and continental spots. Established in 1974, it embodies the resilience of Iraqi football amid geopolitical turmoil, drawing massive fan support across the country.

History and foundation

The league's history is marked by interruptions due to conflicts. Launched as the Thousand League, Al-Sinaa claimed the inaugural title. Wars in the 1980s, 1990s, and the 2003 invasion halted play multiple times, with a full revival in 2009. Renamed Stars League in 2021 via sponsorship, it saw Al-Zawraa's five straight titles in the 1990s. A memorable 2019 clash between Al-Kahrabaa and Al-Zawraa ended in penalty controversy, highlighting the league's passion.

Tournament format

Comprising 20 teams, the format involves a double round-robin (38 matches per team), crowning the champion and allocating AFC Champions League and Cup slots. Bottom two face relegation to the First Division, with playoffs. Season runs August to May, pausing for Ramadan and internationals.
