The Georgian Championship, known as Erovnuli Liga or Superliga, is the top tier of professional football in Georgia. Established in 1990 post-Soviet independence, it features 10 clubs competing for the national title, European spots, and survival. The season runs from February to December, adapting to the Caucasian climate.

History and foundation

Born from the ashes of Soviet football, the first 1990 champions were Iberia 1999 Tbilisi. The 1990s saw dominance by Tbilisi giants like Dinamo and Torino (now WIT Georgia). From the 2000s, Saburtalo and Dila Gori spiced things up. Fun fact: Dinamo Tbilisi claimed their 15th title in 2017, but Torpedo Kutaisi shocked with an 11-point win in 2020. Despite economic hurdles, the league has nurtured talents like Kaka Kaladze for Europe.

Tournament format

Round-robin format: 10 teams play 36 matches (home and away). Post-regular season playoffs: top 6 vie for title and Europe in a points-carrying mini-league; bottom 4 fight relegation. Champion qualifies directly for Champions League, runners-up and Cup winners for Conference League, ensuring drama till the end.

High-scoring with ~2.7 goals per game, thanks to Georgian flair. All-time top scorer Giorgi Demetradze (211 for Dinamo Tbilisi). Stars include Kaha Kaladze (to AC Milan), Levan Kenia, Mikheil Kvelashvili (2023/24 top scorer with 19 goals). Current forces Torpedo Kutaisi and Dinamo Batumi thrill with attacks.
