History and foundation

Launched in 1922 by the Football Association of Ireland, the inaugural final saw Dublin University defeat Limerick 3-0. The 1930s belonged to Dublin giants like Shamrock Rovers. A landmark upset came in 1971 when non-league St. Patrick's Athletic stunned Waterford 4-0. Shamrock Rovers dominated the 1980s-90s with multiple wins, alongside Derry City. Dundalk claimed their 12th title in 2015, while 2023 saw Drogheda United edge out Cork City.

Tournament format

It's a pure knockout format with around 60-70 entrants from the Premier and First Divisions down to amateurs. Single-elimination ties, drawn anew each round. The campaign kicks off in spring, culminating in the November final at Dublin's Aviva Stadium, home to 51,700 roaring fans.
