Launched in the early 2000s amid efforts to bolster youth development following the national team's international struggles, the championship gained prominence in 2015 when FAS U-20 clinched the title, propelling forward Enrique Alvarado to senior debut and MLS scouts' radars. A 2019 format overhaul extended matches for fiercer competition. Notably, during the 2020 COVID-19 disruptions, it was among few Central American leagues to avoid full suspension, sustaining player growth. Featuring 12 teams mirroring Primera División clubs, the season splits into Apertura (July-December) and Clausura (January-May) phases.
