Canadian Championship. League1 Ontario (League1 Ontario) is the premier semi-professional soccer league in Ontario, integrated into Canada's national Championship pyramid. Launched in 2014 as the province's first Division 1 league, it unites ambitious clubs fostering local soccer growth. L1O serves as a vital stepping stone in the Canadian football structure, nurturing young talent and feeding teams into national playoffs.
History and foundation
League1 Ontario was established to bridge the gap below the Canadian Premier League. The inaugural 2014 season featured seven teams, with Sigma FC claiming the title by defeating Toronto Croatia in the final. Since 2019, L1O winners qualify for the Canadian Championship. A highlight: in 2021, Woodbridge Strikers reached the Canadian Championship final, falling to Forge FC. The league adapted through the pandemic with shortened seasons but continues expanding fanbase in the Greater Toronto Area.
Tournament format
The season runs May to October in a regular season format with 10–14 teams (12 in 2024). Each plays opponents four times (two home, two away), totaling 22 matches. Top 8 advance to playoffs: quarterfinals, semifinals, and final. L1O champions enter the Canadian Championship and eye promotion to the forthcoming League2 (2025). Games occur on semi-pro stadiums holding 1,000–5,000 fans.
