Canadian Championship. League 1. British Columbia
League 1 British Columbia (BC League 1) is the premier semi-professional soccer league in British Columbia, integrated into the Canadian Championship structure. It showcases top regional clubs, fostering talent development and fierce competition for national berths, drawing crowds to lively matches and online streams.
History and foundation
Launched in 2018 as the successor to the elite BCSPL division, BC League 1 rapidly became BC's flagship competition. Valour FC won the inaugural season, but Harbux FC (now Valour FC Vancouver) dominated in 2019, claiming both regular season and playoff titles. The 2020 COVID hiatus tested resilience, yet 2021 saw record crowds. Highlight: the 2022 Valour vs. Burnaby United clash drew 2500 fans. Winners qualify for the Canadian Championship, linking to pro levels.
Tournament format
The season features a regular round-robin with 8–10 teams in the Premier division (double round-robin, 18 games). Top 6 advance to playoffs: quarterfinals (sometimes), semis, and grand final. A Championship division runs reserves. Fixtures span April to October on semi-pro grounds holding up to 5000.
