The Reserve League of Azerbaijan is a competitive platform for the reserve teams of Premier League and First Division clubs, overseen by the Association of Football Federations of Azerbaijan (AFFA). Launched in the mid-2010s, it focuses on nurturing young talent by providing competitive match experience away from the high stakes of the top flight. Featuring 10-12 squads from academies of powerhouses like Qarabağ, Neftçi, and Gabala, it runs concurrently with the main league, bridging the gap between youth development and senior professional football.

History and foundation

Initiated in 2016 amid football reforms in Azerbaijan, the league's inaugural season was claimed by Qarabağ-2, mirroring their first-team dominance. A notable milestone came in 2019 when midfielder Elvin Camalov transitioned from reserves to the national team spotlight. The competition paused during the COVID-19 pandemic and regional tensions but relaunched in 2023 with refined rules emphasizing youth pathways. A crowd-pleasing fact: the 2021 Neftçi-2 vs Sumgayit-2 clash drew 2,500 fans, a record for reserve fixtures.

Tournament format

The season spans August to May, comprising a double round-robin regular phase (22-26 matches per team). Standings are based on points (three for a win), without playoffs or relegation. Age caps at U-23 with allowances for three overage outfield players. Games occur at academy grounds, streamed live on AFFA's YouTube channel for broader reach.
