History and foundation
Launched in the early 2000s as part of Australia's youth football pyramid tied to the National Premier Leagues (NPL), the Queensland U20 evolved from local junior tournaments run by Football Queensland. A highlight: in 2018, Brisbane Roar Youth clinched the national title after state dominance, drawing A-League scouts. COVID-19 halted the 2020 season, but a swift rebound saw record crowds in 2022, with over 5,000 at the final.
Tournament format
The season features 22-26 rounds in a double round-robin format (home and away). 10-12 NPL Queensland clubs compete; the winner advances to the national NPL U20 championship against other state champions. Playoffs include quarterfinals, semifinals, and a grand final. The regular season runs March to August, with breaks for internationals.
