The Algerian Championship for Division 1 U21 teams is a youth competition run by the Algerian Football Federation (FAF), aimed at nurturing talents under 21 from top-tier clubs. It serves as a vital breeding ground for future stars, blending fierce rivalry with demands for tactical awareness and athletic prowess.

History and foundation

Introduced in the early 2010s amid Algeria's national team triumphs in the Africa Cup of Nations, it gained official status in 2015 to bolster youth development. Notably, in 2018, JS Kabylie U21 clinched the title, propelling players like midfielder Amine Benramma to senior Ligue 1 and international duty. The tournament paused during the 2020 COVID-19 crisis but rebounded with enhanced protocols, solidifying its scouting significance.

Tournament format

Mirroring the senior Ligue 1 schedule, 16 teams contest a double round-robin (30 matches), home and away. The champion is crowned U21 titleholder, with top performers fast-tracked to youth internationals. Top-4 enter U21 Super Cup playoffs. Strict U21 age cap applies, allowing up to three overage outfield players.
