Italian Supercup

The Italian Supercup is an annual showdown kicking off Italy's football season, pitting the Serie A champions against the Coppa Italia winners. If one team claims both, the Serie A runner-up steps in. This fixture often signals early dominance and sets the tone for the campaign ahead.

History and foundation

Launched in 1988 as the Supercoppa Serie A, it evolved into the Supercoppa Italiana by 2023. The inaugural clash at San Siro saw Milan thrash Sampdoria 3-1. Over the years, it's gone global: USA in 2003, Beijing 2009, Jeddah 2018. A quirky twist — Inter's 2022 3-0 win over Milan was stripped due to the plusvalenza scandal, nullifying both titles. Juventus tops the roll with 9 wins, Milan close behind with 7.

Tournament format

Traditionally a single neutral-venue summer match, it briefly became a two-legged affair from 1996-2000 before reverting. From 2023/24, it's a mini-tournament: Serie A champ and runner-up plus Coppa Italia winner and finalist compete in semis and final, hosted in Saudi Arabia at King Abdullah Sports City.
