The Indian Super League (ISL) is India's top-tier football competition, launched in 2014 to boost the sport's profile in a cricket-dominated nation. It features elite clubs, international stars, and Asian talents, significantly contributing to the growth of the national team.

History and foundation

ISL emerged from a partnership between the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and private investors to professionalize Indian football. ATK won the inaugural season, while Bengaluru FC became the first back-to-back champion in 2019. The COVID-19 pandemic led to bubble tournaments in Goa. ATK holds the record with three titles; Mumbai City won consecutive crowns in 2021-22. The league expanded to 12 teams, with Odisha FC's surprise 2023 victory marking a new era.

Tournament format

The format involves a double round-robin regular season (home and away), with the top six advancing to playoffs culminating in the final. The season runs October to March, matches are 90 minutes, and VAR has been in use since 2022. Rules limit foreign players to six per squad, with quotas for Asian signings.

Average goals per match hover around 2.5, rising with attacking flair. Top scorers include Bartholomew Ogbeche (14 goals in 2017/18) and Poland's Bartosz Slawosz (15 for Bengaluru in 2018/19).
