The Indian Super League (ISL), India's top-tier football competition, was established in 2014 to capitalize on the nation's burgeoning football passion amid a population exceeding 1.4 billion. Modeled after successful sports franchises, it aims to elevate Indian football to continental prominence, featuring 12 clubs battling for supremacy and AFC Champions League spots.

History and foundation

Launched as a franchise league with six teams, inspired by cricket's IPL, ISL became the premier division in 2019, surpassing the traditional I-League. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted progress, but post-2022 promotions and relegations stabilized it. Notably, Mumbai City FC's 2020 triumph featured Hugo Boumous as a standout. ATK Mohun Bagan holds three titles. Early resistance from state federations gave way to growth, with attendance surging to over 20,000 per match in key venues.

Tournament format

Format includes a 22-match regular season (home-and-away round-robin). Top six advance to playoffs: quarterfinals, two-legged semifinals, and a neutral-site final. From 2023/24, a split-season with a 'golden quadrangle' phase. Running September to March, avoiding monsoons, teams can field up to six foreigners, three starters. Prize money exceeds $1 million for winners.
