The Icelandic Championship, known as the Besta deild karla or Premier League, is the top tier of Icelandic football. Since 1912, it has featured the nation's elite clubs battling for the title and European spots, blending harsh weather, loyal fans, and thrilling upsets.

History and foundation

Launched in 1912 as a national championship, the modern Premier League format emerged in the 1990s. Record holder is Reykjavík with 17 titles, followed by KR Reykjavík. The 2010s boom followed Euro 2016 success, turning it into a talent factory. Memorable: Valur's 2017 win and KR's 93rd-minute goal against Víkingur in 2020.

Tournament format

The season spans 22 rounds from April to October due to climate. 12 teams play home-and-away. Champion qualifies for Champions League, top-3 for Conference League. Positions 3-10 fight relegation playoffs; 11-12 drop to 1. deild. Promotion/relegation adds edge.
