Regionalliga Bavaria is one of five divisions in Germany's Regionalliga (fourth tier), featuring clubs from Bavaria and nearby areas. It acts as a launchpad for ambitious sides eyeing promotion to the 3. Liga, blending youth prospects and seasoned pros amid passionate crowds on intimate Bavarian grounds.

History and foundation

Established in 1963 as Bayernliga, it evolved through reforms: joining the Oberliga in 1978 and integrating into the modern Regionalliga in 2008. Highlights include TSV 1860 Munich II's dominance in the 2010s, a 2010 match-fixing scandal, and Schwäbisch Hall's near-promotion push. Fun fact: Bastian Schweinsteiger and Thomas Müller honed skills here with Bayern reserves.

Tournament format

20 teams compete in a double round-robin (38 matches). Top two advance to 3. Liga playoffs, third enters relegation/promotion games. Bottom two drop to Bayernliga, others face playoffs. Season runs August to May with a winter break.

Interesting facts

Average goals per game hover at 3.2, favoring tight defenses and swift counters. All-time scorers: Mario Krwick (102 for Bamberg) and Benedict Nuss (Schwäbisch Hall records). Standouts include Kevin Kraus (ex-Bayern II, now higher tiers) and veteran Daniel Hoyer. The league thrives on gritty, unpredictable soccer from everyday pros.
