The Oberliga Westfalen is one of Germany's most vibrant regional leagues at the fifth tier. It brings together clubs from the historic Westphalia region in North Rhine-Westphalia, acting as a crucial stepping stone for ambitious teams aiming to climb higher in the German football pyramid, blending deep-rooted traditions with fierce modern competition.

History and foundation

Established in 1978 as the top amateur league in the region, the Oberliga Westfalen traces its roots to pre-war eras when Westphalian clubs vied for local supremacy. A major reorganization came in 1994 with Germany's new league structure. Notably, in the 2010s, TuS Erndtebrück, under charismatic coach Marcus Weber, achieved back-to-back promotions to the Regionalliga West, setting an attendance record of up to 5,000 fans for derbies against VfB Halle. The 2020 pandemic disrupted play, but the league rebounded swiftly; in 2022/23, SVA 07 Emden stunned favorites to claim the title in a thrilling finish.

Tournament format

The league features two groups of 16 teams each—North and South—reflecting Westphalia's geography. The season involves a single round-robin within groups and a full round-robin between them, totaling 30 matches. Group winners earn direct promotion to Regionalliga West, runners-up enter playoffs. The bottom two from each group face relegation to Landesliga, ensuring drama until the final whistle.
