German Championship. NOFV Oberliga South
The NOFV Oberliga South is one of two fifth-tier leagues in German football under the German Football Association (DFB). It features 18 clubs from southern Saxony, Thuringia, and Saxony-Anhalt. The season runs from August to May on intimate stadiums buzzing with fan passion. This is where talents emerge for higher divisions, and supporters cherish every hard-fought goal.
History and foundation
Established in 1994 post-East German football restructuring, early dominance came from clubs like FC Chemnitz and Rot-Weiß Erfurt. Memorable 2010/11 saw BSV 07 Leipzig promote to Regionalliga. In 2018, Carl Zeiss Jena returned to the top tier after a thrilling race. Fun fact: 2000s match-fixing scandals prompted stricter DFB oversight. Alumni include Dynamo Dresden and Hallescher FC, now in 3. Liga.
Tournament format
Standard format: 18 teams in a double round-robin, 34 matches. Winner promotes directly to Regionalliga Northeast; 2nd-5th enter playoffs for second spot. 16th-18th relegate to Landesligen, 15th plays relegation playoffs. 2023/24 rule limits four teams per state association for fairness.
