FNL Cup

The FNL Cup is an annual knockout tournament organized by Russia's First League (FNL), featuring FNL clubs and occasionally teams from lower divisions. It injects excitement into the season, offering mid-table sides a shot at silverware and testing their mettle in high-stakes playoff formats with plenty of surprises.

History and foundation

Launched in 2011 as the First League Cup, it aimed to spice up the FNL calendar and provide cup experience. Early dominance came from powerhouses like Krasnodar and Rostov, but Tom', Yenisey, and Orenburg shone later. The 2017 final saw Yenisey edge Krylya Sovetov in penalties—a thriller. Notably, the 2020 edition was scrapped due to the pandemic, a rare hiccup. Spartak-2's deep runs added spice.

Tournament format

Classic single-elimination bracket with one-off ties. Typically 18-20 FNL teams, sometimes joined by FNL-2 or RPL sides. From the round of 16 to the final, it's pure knockout, with hosts drawn or seeded. Fixtures slot into the regular schedule without clashing with the Russian Cup.

Interesting facts

High-scoring affair: average goals per game around 2.8, fueled by FNL's attacking flair. Top scorers include Maksim Votinov (Tambov, 5 goals in 2019) and Artur Sarduarov (Orenburg). Standouts: Aleksey Ionov from Zenit to Krasnodar, Sergey Ignashevich at Krylya, and prospects like Amoran from Spartak-2. It's a launchpad for emerging stars like Fedor Chalov.
