Veikkausliiga, Finland's top-tier football league, features 12 elite clubs battling for supremacy. It's the cornerstone of Finnish soccer, blending regional rivalries with aspirations for European success and nurturing talents for the national team.

History and foundation

Launched in 1930 as Mestaruussarja, it adopted the Veikkausliiga name in 1990. HJK Helsinki has dominated with 33 titles, especially in the early 20th century. The switch to a spring-fall schedule in 1995 boosted competitiveness. KuPS (6 titles) and FC Haka (4) rose in the 2010s. Highlights include Inter Turku's 2008 triumph after 15 years and the 2011 match-fixing scandal that prompted reforms.

Tournament format

The season runs April to November: 12 teams play a double round-robin (22 matches). Top 6 compete in a championship group, bottom 6 in a relegation group, carrying over points. Champion qualifies for Champions League, runners-up for Conference League. 11th place relegates directly, 10th faces playoffs against Ykkönen sides.
