The Isthmian League First Division is a cornerstone of England's football pyramid at step 5 (eighth tier). It features semi-professional and amateur clubs primarily from South East England, including London, Kent, Surrey, and Essex, providing a competitive arena for aspiring teams to climb the ladder through promotion.

History and foundation

Founded in 1905 by the Isthmian Football Association, the league started modestly but grew amid post-WWII football expansions. The 1979 pyramid integration elevated its status. Notable moments include Worthing FC's 1983 FA Cup run, reaching the first round proper after giant-killings. Restructuring in 2002 split it into Premier and lower divisions, with the First Division becoming a promotion hotspot to the Premier Division.

Tournament format

Comprising 22 teams, it follows a double round-robin format: 42 matches home and away. The champion earns automatic promotion to the Isthmian League Premier Division, while 2nd to 5th places contest playoffs for another spot. Bottom three face relegation to Division One, with playoffs possible. Season runs August to April, pausing for holidays.
