The Chinese Super League (CSL) is the top professional football division in the People's Republic of China. Launched in 2004, it features 16 clubs vying for the national title, AFC Champions League spots, and survival in the top flight. CSL blends massive investments with the fervor of millions of fans across Beijing, Shanghai, and beyond.

History and foundation

Formed in 2004 from the ashes of the old Second Division, early dominance came from Shanghai Shenhua and Changchun Yatai. The 2010s 'golden era' saw billions poured in, luring Hulk, Oscar, Carlos Tevez, and Ramires to teams like Shanghai Port and Guangzhou Evergrande. Guangzhou clinched 8 titles from 2011-2017 under Marcello Lippi, winning two AFC Champions Leagues. Recent years spotlight Shanghai Port and Shenhua, amid past match-fixing scandals that tested the league's resolve.

Tournament format

The season runs March to November with a 30-match double round-robin format: home and away. Three points for a win, one for a draw. Champions and Cup winners earn AFC Champions League berths; bottom two drop to League One, with playoffs for the third-from-bottom. 2024 rules cap four foreign starters, prioritizing naturalized players to boost domestic talent.
