The Northeast Cup of Brazil, or Copa do Nordeste, is a regional competition featuring clubs from nine northeastern states: Bahia, Ceará, Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Maranhão, Piauí, Alagoas, and Sergipe. This tournament captures the vibrant football culture of Brazil's sun-soaked northeast, where passion for the game mingles with carnival vibes and Atlantic breezes. It draws fans with its local flavor and fierce rivalry among Brazil's mid-tier clubs.

History and foundation

Launched in 1994 as 'Copa Norte-Nordeste', it solidified in 1997. The 2000s saw pauses due to financial woes, but since 2013, it's been annual. Bahia leads with 7 titles, followed by Sport and Fortaleza with 4 each. Memorable moments include Bahia's 3-1 win over Grêmio in the 2019 final and Fluminense's 2022 double after their Copa do Brasil triumph.

Tournament format

The format pits 36 teams in groups of 4-5. Top teams advance to knockout rounds: round of 16, quarters, semis, and final. Two-legged ties until the single-match final on a neutral venue, often Castelao Arena in Fortaleza. Since 2023, golden goal in extra time boosts excitement. Runs January to April, slotting neatly before Série A.
