Gaucho League Division 3 is the third tier of the Rio Grande do Sul state football championship within Brazil's vast football ecosystem. It features amateur and semi-pro clubs vying for promotion and regional honors, embodying the raw passion of southern Brazilian soccer on intimate, gritty stadiums.

History and foundation

Established in the early 2000s from local amateur setups, Division 3 solidified in 2010 with state federation reforms creating a clear hierarchy: Division 1 for giants like Internacional, Division 2 as a bridge, and Division 3 as the launchpad. A standout moment was 2018 when underdog EC Passo Fundo reached playoffs, nearly ascending and sparking statewide buzz. The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic truncated the season, but resilient clubs played to sparse crowds, heightening the intensity.

Tournament format

The format pits 12–16 teams in a double round-robin regular season. Top four advance to single-elimination playoffs: quarterfinals, semis, final. Winners earn promotion to Division 2; bottom two face relegation to fourth tier or local leagues. Running February to June with Carnival breaks, games occur weekends on 1–5k capacity venues.
