Belgian Women's Championship
The Belgian Women's Championship, or Super League Vrouwenvoetbal, is the top tier of women's club football in Belgium. It features elite teams vying for the national title and European spots. The season runs from August to May, captivating fans with intense matches and the rising popularity of women's soccer.
History and foundation
Founded in 1917 as Scootervrouwencompetitie, the modern Super League emerged in 2015 post-restructuring. Early dominance came from Standard Fémina de Liège in the 1970s-80s. Club YLA (Brugge) then claimed 11 straight titles from 2007-2017, a national record. Key milestone: Brugge Girls' 2021 Champions League quarterfinal run. COVID-19 shortened the 2020 season, but recovery saw 30% attendance growth.
Tournament format
12 teams play a double round-robin (22 matches), followed by playoffs: top-4 in championship group, bottom in relegation group. The champion is crowned via playoff final; Cup winners earn UEFA Champions League entry. VAR introduced for key games since 2023.
